Why I’m Ditching the Harsh Chemicals in My Home (And You Should Too)

Last Updated 2/6/2025

Let’s get real for a second. As a chiropractor, it’s kind of assumed that I’m all about clean, natural, and toxin-free everything. But here's the truth: I'm not 100% perfect. It’s easy to get caught up in what we should be doing when it comes to health and wellness, but I’m definitely a work in progress.

I mean, I love my job and I encourage my patients to take care of themselves naturally, but that doesn’t always mean I’ve got everything in my own life figured out—especially when it comes to cleaning products. The good news? I’m taking small, manageable steps to create a cleaner, toxin-free environment for my family and myself. And I’ll be honest, the first step for me was simply swapping out the harsh chemicals I used to scrub my house for some natural alternatives. Here’s why I think you might want to do the same.

1. Because Breathing Doesn’t Need to Hurt

I’ll admit, I used to love the super clean smell of traditional cleaners. But over time, I realized I was pretty much choking on the fumes every time I cleaned. If you’ve ever gotten a headache or felt dizzy after using harsh cleaning products, you know exactly what I mean. It just doesn’t feel right.

Now, I’m switching to more natural cleaners—and let me tell you, it’s been a game changer. No more chemicals lingering in the air. No more headaches. Just clean surfaces, fresh air, and a way easier time breathing.

2. They're Safer for Your Family

If you’ve got kids or pets, you’ve probably thought about what’s going into your home and on your surfaces. Harsh chemicals can irritate skin, trigger allergic reactions, or even cause long-term health problems. I don’t want to risk that for my family.

Switching to natural products has made a huge difference. The ingredients are non-toxic, so I don’t have to worry about anyone coming into contact with potentially harmful substances. I feel good about what I’m using, and it’s a relief knowing I’m keeping things safer for everyone in my home.

3. Better for the Planet

Okay, let’s talk environment for a minute. A lot of traditional cleaning products contain chemicals that aren’t biodegradable, and they end up in our water systems, polluting the environment and harming wildlife. That doesn’t sit well with me.

I’ve started using eco-friendly, biodegradable cleaners that are better for the planet—and it feels good to know I’m doing my part, even if it’s just by switching up my cleaning products. It’s a small change that adds up over time.

4. It Actually Works (And It’s Less Work)

I’ll admit, I was skeptical at first. Natural products? Would they work as well as the heavy-duty cleaners I’d been using? Turns out, they do. A little bit of vinegar, baking soda, and a few drops of essential oils work wonders—without all the scrubbing.

And here’s the bonus: natural products are gentler on surfaces. No more worrying about whether I’m stripping the finish off my countertops or dulling my floors. They clean just as effectively, but I don’t have to put in extra elbow grease. Win-win.

5. It’s Easier on Your Wallet

I’m not one to throw around a ton of cash if I don’t need to. The great thing about natural cleaners? They’re cost-effective. You don’t need a ton of different products for every little task. Things like baking soda, castile soap, and essential oils are super versatile. I can use them for everything from cleaning my kitchen to making my own personal care products.

And since I’m not constantly buying new bottles of specialty cleaners, I’m actually saving money in the long run.

6. Fresh Air? Yes, Please

I love the idea of clean air in my home, but traditional air fresheners can do more harm than good. Many of them release chemicals into the air that can irritate your lungs or contribute to poor indoor air quality. Natural air fresheners made with essential oils, on the other hand, can help purify the air, all while making your home smell amazing. No harmful chemicals, just a fresh, clean environment.

So, while I’m not here claiming to be perfect (far from it), I am trying to practice what I preach. I’m taking small steps toward a cleaner, toxin-free home, and the change has been pretty great so far. If you’re thinking about making the switch to natural cleaning products, I highly recommend giving it a try.
